How to identify if it is manufacturer or trading company
When sourcing products, distinguishing between factories (manufacturers) and trading companies (middlemen) is crucial for pricing, quality control, and supply chain efficiency. Here are key indicators to differentiate them:
1. Product Range & Customization
Manufacturer:
Specializes in a specific product category (e.g., only water bottles).
Offers customization (OEM/ODM), including molds, materials, and branding.
Trading Company:
Sells a wide variety of unrelated products (e.g., both water bottles and kitchenware).
2.Factory Audit & Certifications
Manufacturer:
Can provide factory photos, production videos, or onsite visit invitations.
Holds industry-specific certifications with factory name (e.g., ISO, BSCI, FDA for food-grade products).
Trading Company:
They can provide industry-specific certifications.but from different factory ,maybe they will revise to his trading company name ,so you have to check the authenticity from the official website.
3. Video with foreign trade salesman
Manufacturer:
Making a video call with foreign trade salesman during the working time on weekdays, without prior notice, , foreign trade salesman can immediately answer and show you the factory’s workshop and office.
Trading Company:
He couldn’t answer immediately, or find an excuse to say he couldn’t answer, and then set a time to have the video call so that he could arrive at the factory earlier
4. Ask your partner or old supplier visit factory
Manufacturer:
Foreign trade salesman can entertain your partner soon if your partner visit factory as address on website ,without prior notice
Trading Company:
- If his address is right ,you can’s find factory just office
- If his address is partner factory’s ,he can’t entertain you soon ,give you a excuse of that he is out ,then his colleague will entertain you ,
Why coose manufacturer not trading company
1.Price
Factories:
Lower prices since there’s no middleman markup.
Possible discounts for long-term partnerships.
Trading Companies:
Higher prices due to additional profit margins.
2. Quality Control
Factories:
the factory’s survival way is product quality, customer service, so that providing each customer with high-quality products in order to serve them well.
Trading Companies:
Trading companies act as intermediaries, not producers. They are involved in a wide range of products ,can’t do very professional in one file
3. After-sale
Factories:
As a factory, We are responsible with our products.because our success depends on product quality.”once there is a quality issue, our engineering team will analysis to identify whether the issue stems from production, materials, or external factors and solve the problem .. If a quality defect is verified as our fault, we will resolve it promptly at our own cost
Trading Companies:
In international trade, quality disputes sometimes arise not because of the factory’s default production standards, but due to cost-cutting decisions made by trading companies (e.g., selecting cheaper factories or substituting materials without approval). However, when defects occur, factories often refuse compensation, and trading companies—prioritizing profits—are reluctant to absorb losses.
